What we can do for you


Our training exercises are designed to provide participants the opportunity to demonstrate key humanitarian competencies as listed in the Core Humanitarian Competency Framework.

We expect the staff members of emergency management organizations, public safety agencies, and first responders may be participating in our programs to incorporate their knowledge into humanitarian practice frameworks, learn new skill-sets, or demonstrate existing humanitarian response competencies. To meet these needs, Forage Center education staff have identified the following competencies as foundational to programs aimed at first responders, emergency management staff, and members of public safety agencies.

Training will provide staff and agency members with an opportunity to demonstrate and apply a working understanding of the following:

  1. Phases of humanitarian response, including preparedness, response, and recovery (Understanding the humanitarian context);

  2. Political and cultural context and underlying causes of a humanitarian crisis (Understanding the humanitarian context);

  3. Key national and international humanitarian frameworks, standards, principles, and codes, and their application to evaluation of program goals and staff behaviors, and (Applying humanitarian standards and principles; Motivating and influencing others);

  4. Measures to “do no harm” and minimize risks for organizational partners and crisis-affected people you work with (Minimizing risk to communities, partners, and stakeholders);

  5. Wider impact of their decisions and when to involve others in the decision-making process (Making decisions);

  6. Their personal capacity for being answerable to crisis-affected people for their actions and decisions (Working accountably);

  7. Vulnerability in a humanitarian context by complying with safety and security protocols set by organizations and adapted to local conditions (Managing personal safety and security).

In addition, staff and agency participants will be challenged to demonstrate:

  1. The capacity to remain focused on organizational objectives and goals in a rapidly changing environment (Adapting and coping);

  2. A recognition of personal stress and capacity for remaining constructive and positive under stress and to tolerate difficult and challenging environments (Adapting and coping).
