Program Structure

The Forage Center can provide programs of varying lengths, ranging from our full four day Coastal Promise Excercise to a two-day introductory exercise to a half-day topical workshop.

The Four (4) - day “Coastal Promise” Exercise

As a program for humanitarian and non-profit staff members and volunteers, the four-day “Coastal Promise” exercise is designed as a full-functional exercise. In this exercise, participants will role-play as members of a humanitarian organization who have been deployed to a foreign country impacted by simultaneous community crisis and natural disaster (a complex emergency). Participants will receive briefings about humanitarian practice, safety basics, and WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) standards. Participants will lead meetings with role-players who represent key stakeholders in a community in crisis. Prior to the exercise, participants will receive a reading list and briefing package. It is expected participants have completed introductory work prior to the exercise, either in the context of educational background, or through their own volunteer or professional experience.

The two (2) - day introductory exercise

he two-day (~18 working hour) introductory exercise is usually incorporated into a larger seminar or learning experience, and is designed to provide participants with a limited “look” at challenges to humanitarian response. Participants who take part in the two-day exercise can also participate in the four-day exercise at a future time - the two exercises are designed to scaffold learning if participants take part in each. As a professional development program, the two-day introductory exercise is designed for staff members or volunteers with all levels of experience.

Half (½) - day topical workshops

The half-day workshops are generally 3-4 hours long (depending on scheduling) and are topical in nature - negotiation, for example, or implementation of humanitarian principles. The workshops include a lecture introducing the topic, paired with one or more experiential group-based activities designed to give participants practice in applying concepts. The workshops can be used for any level of professional development for staff members and volunteers.
